Yes after much anticipation the weekend of the 18th and 19th of August had finally arrived, many had penned it in long ago not just because of the annual 250 Club draw but also because of the significance of the weekends trip to Benalla to potentially wrap up the league title in the First grade and possibly the ressies. Well with a big weekend now over and with two more league titles in the bag we take you back to where it all began with yet another memorable 250 Club draw.
Ticket sales struggled early but finished with the usual flourish and with good weather and a good crowd the green & white supporters lead by the Drinkin’ Club convened at Greenfield Park for another draw. Most settled in early at a steady pace and enjoyed the BBQ cooked by Rick and Alison until the Chief took over to run the auction. The bidding was frantic early on between Dicko, BT and Shanna’s as they cleaned up with some early bargains then Tony Bush along with Plunk and Kel jumped in for some multiple ticket books. The now famous bidding war for ticket number 69 lived up to its reputation with the winner also getting the first of Jan Poynter’s increasingly popular hand knitted green and black scarves. Plunk obviously on a good wicket out at Kel’s Cabinets yelled longest loudest to win to coveted No. 69 and associated scarf and it was onto the big ticket items when the big boys come out to play.
Syndicates were formed by a wink and a nod as many sized up the Guv for his now customary assault on the last five ticket book. Early bidding saw a Plunkett/Jones syndicate pushing hard slowly increasing the bid by lots of $50 from $100 through to $350 but the pace got to hot as the Guv quickly squashed any confidence they had in their wallet sizes and soon they were left in disarray in Guv’s wake. It was time for the big spenders to enter the arena and with all the small players gone it was Alex Vaskovic who timed his run like only Al can by jumping in at the $400 mark. The small players soon recognizing a bigger fish had arrived rallied around Al as he sought to take on the Guv. The bidding was slow but deliberate as both Guv and Al raised the stakes past last year’s record bid of $400 pushing the limit up to $650. Guv then paused as Al and his crew felt they may have finally broken him but it was only a small pause to take a swig from his drink as he promptly crushed the Vaskovic challenge with a new record bid of $700!
With the auction done and the kegs fast running out it was time for the draw with a number of minnows winning back their ticket price until the big bucks came on offer? In the end it was great to see Club legend and ressies skipper Iain Dalitz come flying through the crowd to claim the top prize closely followed by Ricky ‘Spud’ Appleton with his old man in tow for the second prize. It is always good to see one of our own win the big prizes so congrats to Dalo and Spud on winning the big bucks, although we hear not much of it was left by Saturday morning as the faithful slowly drifted out and around to the Star Bar to celebrate with Dalo… who gladly shouted anyone and everyone!
So yet another successful draw as the organizers settled into the clean up with only a handful of our more senior supporters namely John Ruitenberg, Bazza Holmes, Tony Bush, Kel Smith, Noel Browne, Glenn O’Connell, Eric Chambers and Chris Muller amongst others left. Not happy to just stand and enjoy the last of the brews our elder statesman proceeded to put on their own show when they started singing and dancing with the mops and brooms as the rest did the cleaning. Needless to say you should stick to your day jobs men!
Many thanks go to the organizers, bar staff, Auctioneer and BBQ cooks on another great night. Finally thanks go to everyone who purchased a ticket in the draw. It is our major fundraising event and it has again returned good numbers mainly thanks to a few choice syndicates pushing the Guv to a new record $700 bid for the last five tickets! A few have already mentioned they are keen to take the big fella to the $1,000 barrier in 2008 so go easy on the new house Guv you might need another mortgage this time next year!!
Hope to see you all next year…
And the winners were:
